Regulations on the student scientific society

Report on the work of the student scientific society

The history of the Student Scientific Society goes back to the depths of the University’s history. After all, without a doubt, there have always been inquisitive students who constantly tried to learn the secrets of human life and health, to study their chosen specialty more deeply. For this, they came to university departments, clinics or laboratories during extracurricular hours, where they mastered the secrets of medicine under the guidance of their experienced teachers.

The first documentary evidence of the existence of scientific student circles dates back to 1946. Then the circles were created at the departments of normal anatomy, normal physiology, histology, topographic anatomy, pharmacology, neurology, and hygiene. The total number of students was 53.

In 1947, on the initiative of professor  Lyubomudrov A.P. the Student Scientific Society was established. At that time, the medical institute already had 20 scientific circles, which included 325 students.

Many generations of scientists emerged from the ranks of the Student Scientific Society who defended candidate and doctoral dissertations, obtained the titles of associate professors, professors, academicians, and became founders of new scientific directions and schools.

Today, the student scientific society of Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University unites student scientific circles that work in all departments of the university.

In 2022, the total number of members of the Student Scientific Society of the University was about 350 people. Among them, more than 50 people are part of the active group, engaged in both scientific work and the organization of various events. The work of student scientific circles is coordinated by the SSS Council of the university and the SSSCouncils of faculties.

Special committees work within SSS – organization, scientific circles, international and inter-university cooperation, work with foreigners, social work, media and brand committees.

Students who work in circles at university departments are engaged in various types of scientific activities: literary and research work, experimental, laboratory and clinical research, educational activities, conduct activities that go beyond the boundaries of departments and are interesting not only for those students who study at department today.

During the online learning, the activity of SSS changed to a new online format of organizing and holding events. Numerous online audiences gathered lectures, round tables and workshops, in which university teachers and practical doctors actively participated: “Rational nutrition and its role in the clinic of internal diseases”, “Oncoscreening! Is it possible to diagnose cancer “on time”?”, “Ultrasound of the salivary glands”, “Molecular allergy diagnostics: a new era in allergology”, “Long-lasting COVID-19. Consequences of the pandemic”, “Medical business is war, skill or the art of compromises?”, “Osler-Weber-Randeau disease, or hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia”, “Virus recipe book: cooking in laboratory conditions”, “Heart injuries: diagnosis and principles treatment”, “Vaccination against COVID-19”, “New era in the treatment of migraine”, “Transdiagnostic approach in the treatment of sleep disorders”. This year, about 120 university students took part in All-Ukrainian and international students scientific conferences, congresses and competitions.

The war in Ukraine made adjustments to the work of the Student Scientific Society, as evidenced by the topics of lectures, courses, trainings and other events organized and held after the start of warfare: training cycles on providing emergency aid, a course on TCCC (Tactical Combat Casualty Care), lectures on “Providing care for burns in combat conditions”, “Battlefield burn care”, “TCCC for all: stop the bleeding”, “Response to all natural disasters”, “Resuscitation – CombinedBurnTrauma”, “Burn care: recovery in the acute period”, “Surgical treatment of combined injuries of the body in conditions of war”, joint broadcast with the Ministry of Health “Application of VAC-therapy of wounds in conditions of war”.

In organizing and conducting many events, the Student Scientific Society cooperates with the council of young scientists, whose members also worked at the SSS.

In the newspaper “Alma mater” there is a permanent section “News of SSS”.
