In May 1987, the founder of the Lviv School of Preventive Toxicology, professor Mechyslav Grzegotskyi, initiated the creation of a new structural subdivision of the institution – the Laboratory of Industrial Toxicology. The first scientific studies were focused on the toxicity of pesticides – derivatives of benzimidazole, dithiocarbamates, and combination drugs based on them, organophosphorus compounds.

In February 2002, a unified division – the Central Research Laboratory and the Laboratory of Industrial Toxicology – was created. Since that time the Laboratory started active cooperation with university departments consisting in the performance of fragments of research activities, including sanitary and chemical, biochemical, immunological, and microbiological studies in the Laboratory. At the same time, the following areas of research were developing in the Laboratory: sanitary standardization of the permissible content of chemicals in the air of the working area, development of methods to measure concentrations of substances in air and water, as well as scientific justification of hygienic criteria for the safety of working conditions and human life, which is reflected in methodology guidelines developed with the participation of laboratory scientists: Methodology Guidelines No. 8.8.2.4-097-02 “Sanitary standardization of paints and varnishes intended for use in construction”, State Sanitary Rules and Regulations “Enterprises and organizations of the printing industry”, monographs: “Harmful factors of printing production. Hygienic regulations. Control methods” (M.P. Rudnyk, B.P. Kuzminov, 2007), Occupational safety in the printing industry. Problems of occupational hygiene and sanitation” (B.P. Kuzminov, 2008), “Hygienic characteristics of the modern publishing and printing complex” (B.P. Kuzminov, 2010), “Chemical hazards of the production environment of pharmaceutical enterprises of Ukraine; H1-histamine receptor blockers (toxicity, hygienic regulations, control methods) (B.P. Kuzminov, O.B. Kuzminov, T.S. Zazulyak, 2016), national textbook “Occupational Hygiene” (Yu. I. Kundiiev, O.P. Yavorovskyi, 2011).
The adequate level of scientific research, as well as the experience and professionalism of the laboratory’s specialists, allowed it to gain a high level of credibility from the Ministry of Health of Ukraine – attestation for the right to perform sanitary standardization of dangerous factors. Within this authority, more than 70 hygienic regulations for the permissible content of harmful chemical substances in the air and environmental objects, including pesticides, active pharmaceutical ingredients, chemical feedstocks, and methods for measuring their concentrations, have been developed in the Laboratory. One of the main directions of scientific activities in the Laboratory recently is the development of integration processes between national and European legislation in the field of occupational hygiene. In 2021, a scientific study was successfully conducted at the expense of the state budget on the topic “Harmonization of national hygienic regulations of the permissible content of chemicals in the air of the working area with the European regulatory framework” (No. ДР 0120U105464, 2020), and a doctoral thesis was defended on the topic “Improvement and harmonization of the system of sanitary standardization of the content of chemicals in the air of the working area with European legislation using the pharmaceutical production as an example” (doctoral candidate – Tetyana Zazulyak). One of the practical introductions of the latter is the development of a set of measures for the prevention of occupational diseases in chemical and pharmaceutical workers.

Authorities

The Central Research Laboratory and the Laboratory of Industrial Toxicology carries out its activities within the following authorities:

  • Certificate of Accreditation by the National Accreditation Agency of Ukraine for compliance with DSTU EN ISO/IEC 17025:2019 under No. 201369 as of 19 January 2023.
  • Certificate No. РЛ 068/22 as of 01.12.2022 of compliance of the measurement control system with the requirements of DSTU ISO 10012:2005
  • Certificate No. 10 as of 01.12.2021 of accreditation by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine for the right to perform sanitary standardization of dangerous factors
  • Attestation by the State Labour Service of Ukraine to conduct hygienic studies of the working-environment and labor process factors as of 26.11.2018

Areas of focus

The main areas of the laboratory’s focus are::

  • researches and experimental developments in the field of hygiene and toxicology
  • methodological and instrumental support of research activities carried out by university departments
  • preparation and scientific justification of draft legislative acts ensuring regulatory support of public health protection
  • development of regulations on the permissible content of chemicals, including pharmaceuticals, in the air of industrial premises and the environment
  • implementation of state sanitary and epidemiological expertise
  • tests for compliance with medical food safety criteria and scientific and technical documentation
  • hygienic studies of the working-environment and labor process factors

State sanitary and epidemiological expertise

The Laboratory has a commission for conducting state sanitary and epidemiological expertise in particularly difficult cases following the Order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine “On the approval of the Temporary procedure for conducting state sanitary and epidemiological expertise” as of 09.10.2000 (Order of the Chief Health Inspector of Ukraine No. 30 as of 17.09.2021).

Publishing activities, organization of forums
In 1997, the Laboratory of Industrial Toxicology started publishing the collection of scientific papers “Actual Issues of Toxicology and Hygiene”, which has been published since 2010 under the title “Actual Issues of Preventive Medicine”.

We are looking forward to cooperating with You!
